ABOUT US
The Federated Board of Homing Unions (FBHU) consists of approximately 500 actively participating members between the ages of 18 and 90 years old. In addition, the FBHU has about 200 non-active and non-participating members within the same age group. The membership represents more than 90% of previously disadvantaged members as defined by the BBBEE Act 53 of 2003 as amended by Act No4 46 of 2013 and is considered to be a Level 1 Contributor.
The organisation consist of a 14 Board of Executive positions each of which are assigned with specific roles and responsibilities as outlined in our constitution to ensure the objectives of the organisation are achieved.
The representative membership of the organisation covers a vast majority of the Western Cape with 13 recognized and affiliated Union organizations covering an area 3,187.88 km². The affiliated Unions cover the following areas:
Paarl, Wellington, Riebeek-West, Mamre, Malmesbury, Atlantis, Athlone, Belhar, Mitchells Plain, Bellville, Delft, Mamre – (Rural Area), Eersteriver, Kraaifontein, Blue Downs, Kuilsriver, Somerset, Strand, Macassar, Darling, Stellenbosch, Pniel (Rural Area) and Klapmuts.

OUR PROJECTS
The FBHU is committed to our obligations as an NPC and PBO. Members have been assigned as part of their roles within the following activities.

Youth Development
The FBHU introduced a Junior Racing Pigeon Championship in 2019 by identifying 27 junior members younger than 18 years of age and inducting them into the sport of racing pigeons. Between 2020 and 2023 participation has increased the to more than 80 and we have also seen an increase in the criteria of youth between the ages 18 – 25, where such youths are unemployed.
Each junior/youth member will be assigned to a senior mentor to guide and educate them in the sport of racing pigeons to be able to partake in racing. We have clearly outlined the objectives and scope of this project and additional info is available upon request.
The FBHU is committed to work with government bodies, public and private donors and environmental activists in order secure long-term sustainable solutions to our beloved sport of racing pigeons and commitment to various socio-economic objectives.
We recognise the effect of our sport on our members well-being as it gives a sense of purpose to a lot of members and aids with the welcoming stress relief obtained from caring for our feathered friends.
We also recognise the huge potential impact our sport can have to penetrate communities to alleviate the presence of crime and drug abuse amongst our youth as it is a time consuming hobby that in most cases leads to self-taught life skills such as responsibility, creating a loving and caring environment as well as giving purpose to so many youth struggling to find their identity in specifically the crime ridden areas.
